Summer Game Fest made two big changes to the 2026 GOTY race
With the major Summer Game Fest showcases concluded, the second half of the gaming year looks clearer — and the effect on the Game of the Year race is modest. One major new entrant arrived and one significant withdrawal altered the field, but otherwise little changed.
Part of the reason is that publishers are revealing dates earlier, and many of this year’s big showcases were focused on 2027 releases. Grand Theft Auto 6 remains the elephant in the room: its release date was set in stone back in November, and its late-year placement, just days before The Game Awards' eligibility cutoff, has discouraged late entries.
Several potential rivals instead shifted to dates outside GTA 6’s window, with some aiming for January and February 2027. The most notable dropout is Fable. Once the likeliest upset to GTA 6, it was moved to February 2026 to get out of GTA 6’s way, removing the most interesting wild card from 2026’s GOTY conversation.
