Sugar Season 1 recap: Everything to remember
John Sugar, a private investigator played by Colin Farrell, becomes obsessed with the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a wealthy Hollywood producer (James Cromwell). His pursuit of the case is driven in part by the unsolved abduction of his sister, Djen (Maeve Whalen), and brings him into an intense relationship with Olivia’s stepmother, Melanie Matthews (Amy Ryan), while his dog Wiley becomes a loyal companion.
Sugar’s investigation points to Olivia’s half-brother David Siegel (Nate Corddry), and to the criminal Stallings (Eric Lange), who traffics Olivia to Ryan Pavich (Cameron Cowperthwaite), a sadistic predator. Sugar is ultimately able to rescue Olivia, but the scandal destroys David and he dies by suicide; by the end of Season 1 Sugar has exposed the Siegel family’s secret life and solved the case.
The series shifts genres in Episode 6 with a major reveal about Sugar himself.
