Subnautica 2 launched last month with huge player numbers and widespread acclaim, but it remains in early access with a couple years of development still to come. Design lead Anthony Gallegos outlined what players can expect to see in the weeks and months ahead.

The next region, home of the Collector Leviathan, will add a new chassis that Gallegos says brings back “one of the most requested player experiences.” That points to the return of the prawn suit from the original Subnautica—the undersea mech that lets players walk the seafloor on mechanical legs and use attachments like a drill arm and grabber claw—though some specific features have not been confirmed for the sequel.

Multiplayer tweaks are also coming, with a focus on improving proximity chat so players no longer face long delays in hearing one another. Gallegos noted the team is working to reduce that lag, and emotes are planned for a future update. The much‑asked-for survival knife to kill hostile sea creatures is still not in the game.
