Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access with around 20 hours of content and plenty to do, but one of the loudest complaints has been how violently large fish behave. The sequel removed the knife from the original and leaned on weaker, non-lethal options, and Unknown Worlds has stood by the decision not to let players kill the native life.

Design lead Anthony Gallegos explained on MinnMax that the choice wasn’t about “pacifism” but about wanting players to learn to live alongside the world and avoid turning the player into a dominator; the team was also inspired by games like SOMA and Alien: Isolation, where giving players effective combat undercuts the intended constant threat.

Players countered that many encounters feel frustrating rather than tense, with cave areas and basic travel made tedious by overzealous predators. Developers acknowledged this in an open letter on May 20, saying “creature balance needs work” and promising incremental adjustments across upcoming patches.
