Manchester United have joined the race to sign Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with former Boro boss Michael Carrick backing the move. Carrick, who spent three seasons managing Hackney at the Riverside, pushed the youngster's claims during post-season recruitment meetings at Old Trafford.

Hackney has been a key figure in Middlesbrough's midfield over the last three seasons. The 23-year-old looks certain to leave after a narrow 1-0 play-off final defeat to Hull City, and with the Teessiders facing another season in the Championship they are prepared to cash in as he enters the final year of his contract.

Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Everton are also expected to formalise interest. Palace are considering him as a potential successor to Adam Wharton, while United view Hackney as a younger, long-term option amid a broader midfield rebuild that has also included links to Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson.
