Lionsgate announced that the long-in-development Streets of Rage film has assembled its main creative team. Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who wrote all three Sonic the Hedgehog films, will handle the new screenplay, and Jeymes Samuel, director of The Harder They Fall and The Book of Clarence, will direct.

The project will be produced by SEGA’s Toru Nakahara, Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson, alongside Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw. Derek Kolstad, who wrote an earlier draft of the movie announced four years ago, will also serve as a producer.

Streets of Rage launched on the Sega Genesis in 1991 and follows former cops as they battle the crime lord Mr. X. The series is especially known for its influential electronic dance soundtracks and received three direct sequels, the most recent being Streets of Rage 4 after a 25-year gap; that entry received positive reviews and sold more than 2.5 million copies.
