Stranger Things' Franchise Could Keep Running Indefinitely
In the decade since Netflix shifted from physical rentals to original programming, the streamer has produced many science-fiction series. Few, however, match the reach and cultural weight of Stranger Things. Stranger Things debuted in July 2016 and ran for five seasons and 42 episodes, following Hawkins, Indiana, as residents confront the Upside Down and its menacing creatures.
The series channels influences from Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Wes Craven and H.P. Lovecraft, and quickly became a global phenomenon: Symphony Technology Group measured an average of 14 million viewers in the 18–49 demo 35 days after the show's premiere, Season 3 drew 64 million household views in its first month, TV Time named it the most-followed show in 2021 with 5 million followers, and critical tallies include a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and a #175 placement on IMDb’s Top 250.
Although the main series concluded with a final episode in December 2025, the Duffer Brothers have been expanding the universe.
