I’m really bad at Elden Ring Nightreign — not embarrassingly so, but not great. I play Recluse or Scholar, hang back to support my husband and a friend in our trio, and we lose a lot; many nights were spent on Libra and we still haven’t finished the two DLC bosses added six months ago.

And yet I’ve had more fun losing at this game than at almost any other. Small, subtle changes from run to run keep it fresh: will points of interest lean into a night boss’s weakness, or will a random event force us to toss our plans and sprint across the map while being attacked by dogs, hailed on, or swarmed by locusts?

Sometimes the Bell Bearing Hunter is in the castle basement again. We beat the Night Aspect long ago, then revisited him with Scholar and Undertaker for the Forsaken Hollows questlines; after struggling to learn those roles, finally defeating him felt electric, and an accidental rematch the next day proved unexpectedly easy and freeing.
