Steven Gerrard backs Andoni Iraola but warns he won’t be the only candidate
Steven Gerrard has suggested Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola could be a strong fit for Liverpool, praising his work on the south coast and saying Iraola’s style would suit the club. He also cautioned that the Anfield vacancy will attract many elite managers, noting the club’s board will be familiar with Iraola because of the connections to Bournemouth.
Gerrard described the timing of Arne Slot’s exit as surprising at first but ultimately justified after reflection. He pointed to a regression in performances, especially in the last 10 games, and criticised a disjointed, broken style that made parts of the season difficult to watch, even as he said Slot would be remembered for delivering the club’s 20th league title.
The Telegraph reported Fenway Sports Group made the decision with “enormous reluctance,” while the hierarchy is said to want a return to the high-intensity, “heavy metal” football that defined the Klopp years.
