Stars Reach: Raph Koster's new sci-fi sandbox MMO
Raph Koster, best known for Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, has unveiled Stars Reach, a sci‑fi sandbox MMORPG due to launch this summer. The game is the first from Playable Worlds, which Koster co‑founded in 2018. Players can explore the universe, find planets to settle, and build those settlements over time.
Combat and resource gathering support that loop, but Stars Reach uses a classless leveling system so players are not locked into a single play style. It will also let players form governments to manage settlements and impose taxes, leaning into the role‑playing, second‑life aspect of the genre.
Playable Worlds promises Stars Reach will run on a single server that never resets, so everything players build will remain persistent as long as the servers are online. The game is slated for Steam Early Access later this summer and will launch in three paid editions: the $29.99 Firstlight Pack, the $49.99 Voyager Pack, and the $79.99 Cosmonaut Pack.
