Star Wars timeline moves past The Rise of Skywalker
After a seven-year pause in the series chronology, Star Wars is finally set to move beyond the timeline established by the sequel trilogy that concluded in 2019. The franchise will shift away from the current patchwork of sequels, prequels and midquels and advance its overarching timeline with two new standalone films that also aim to lay groundwork for the next cinematic trilogy.
The sequel trilogy was set between 34 and 35 ABY and introduced a new generation of heroes, including Rey, Finn and Poe. With that era now behind it, the saga will resume forward movement in its chronology, offering a fresh period in which to tell new stories and expand the franchise’s mythological lore.
Star Wars: Starfighter, due in May 2027, takes place in 40 ABY, roughly five or six years after The Rise of Skywalker. Ryan Gosling plays the lead, codenamed Damon, and the cast also includes Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, Aaron Pierre, Daniel Ings and Jamael Westman.
