'Star Wars' Director Pitches Wild Crossover With 'Backrooms'
A24's Backrooms became the studio's top-grossing domestic release in less than a week, opening just after The Mandalorian and Grogu and quickly overtaking that entry in the Star Wars line. Rather than a straight box-office battle, the releases were often seen as counter-programming.
Shawn Levy is a producer on Backrooms and recently wrapped production on his film Star Wars: Starfighter. Levy told Vanity Fair he can’t stop imagining the two worlds colliding: "Right now, I'm making a movie called Star Wars: Starfighter, and so I very much have Star Wars on my mind.
And I can't help but be captivated by a Backrooms x Star Wars mashup and, luckily, I've got a little bit involvement in both, so I'll see what I can do." That kind of crossover faces obvious hurdles, given The Walt Disney Company's tight control over Star Wars and its selective approach to releasing legacy material like the Holiday Special or unaltered cuts of the original trilogy.
