Star Fox remake doesn't outfly a Nintendo 64 classic
Velan Studios’ Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 leans harder into family drama and cinematic presentation than the 1997 original. Fox McCloud’s struggle to live up to his father James McCloud is foregrounded through glossy cutscenes that interrupt the action, making the remake feel more polished and movie-ready even as it sometimes mistakes modern sheen for greater maturity.
At its core the game remains the old-school space shooter fans remember: seven planets, short campaign runs, and the thrill of finding alternate routes and secrets on repeat playthroughs. Controls are lightly streamlined—barrel rolls, tilts and evasive somersaults come via quick button presses—so the dogfighting fantasy is accessible without needing deep technical mastery.
There’s no meta progression beyond high-score medals and an Expert difficulty, which keeps the focus squarely on mastering stages rather than chasing unlocks.
