Nintendo faces a monumental task with its full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The N64 classic is still regularly cited as the single greatest video game of all time, and even a brief teaser showing a slumbering Young Link has stirred discontent.

The tiny teaser also confirmed a visual overhaul in the same vein as Velan’s Star Fox remake, leaving a lot of negative space to fill. Velan’s Star Fox is a very respectful recreation of 1997’s Star Fox 64: every classic stage is rebuilt one-to-one, controls are streamlined, and the presentation leans heavily into cinematic flourishes — dazzling visuals, a rearranged score, and many new cutscenes.

Those upgrades look impressive on paper, but the remake often reads as a lateral move rather than an evolution; replacing text scrolls with cinematics didn’t always add new depth to the story. That pattern echoes other recent Nintendo remakes, such as the Super Mario RPG remake in 2023, Mario Vs.
