SSD discounts are scarce ahead of Prime Day — drives to watch

Amazon Prime Day is approaching and Prime Day gaming deals are starting to unfurl, but you shouldn't expect discounts on the best SSDs for gaming any time soon. The ongoing effects of the RAM storage are still taking their toll on drives, prompting Nelson Duann, a vice president at Silicon Motion, to say that "the retail SSD market has almost disappeared."

Stock is dwindling and many of the remaining SSDs on Amazon are listed at prices well beyond their MSRPs. What look like discounts are often just reductions from the inflated prices those drives carried a few days earlier, which is as frustrating as it is demoralising.

If you need extra storage for a desktop gaming rig this week, keep an eye on the drives mentioned here and hope they're close to launch pricing. For PS5 owners, remember you'll need a 2280 form factor, Gen 4 drive with a compatible heatsink to fit into the console's M.2 slot.
