Square Enix's HD-2D aesthetic revives retro RPGs with striking consistency
Square Enix first used the term HD-2D for the 2018 role-playing game Octopath Traveler and has since developed it into a recognizable style and release strategy. The latest entry in that catalog is the ninth official HD-2D title, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, which continues a line of games that keep the spirit of 1990s Super Nintendo RPGs alive.
Visually, HD-2D pairs simple, expressive 2D pixel-art sprites with 3D environments viewed from an elevated camera and enhanced by dynamic lighting and depth-of-field effects. The combination produces a diorama-like presentation that preserves the nostalgic charm of 16-bit art while giving it modern polish—like looking down into a shoebox-sized, living 16-bit world.
The approach has proved adaptable across genres and partners.
