Star Citizen: Squadron 42 'in the closing stages', Chris Roberts says
Star Citizen recently surpassed $1 billion in player funding, a milestone that renewed questions about Cloud Imperium Games' ambitious space MMO and its single-player component, Squadron 42.
Speaking to Variety at DefenseCon, Chris Roberts said Squadron 42 uses Star Citizen's technology to create an "authored" single-player campaign and is "in the closing stages" of development.
Roberts added that "the heat is being turned up for Squadron," indicating marketing will ramp up as the team nears launch and that it has been hard to keep progress under wraps.
At the same time, YouTuber TheAstroPub has shared anonymous developer updates suggesting the game entered some form of beta earlier this year and that performance concerns have led some to predict a 2027 release; he also cited a Twitch message as possible evidence the game could appear at Summer Games Fest. Rumours of another delay are circulating alongside Roberts' comments.
