Spike Lee’s Oldboy Remake Lands on Free Streaming
Tubi added several major action films to its free library on June 1, including Spike Lee’s 2013 remake of Oldboy. The movie joins titles such as The Equalizer, Underworld, Overlord, and The Magnificent Seven remake. Like many of Tubi’s offerings, Oldboy is expected to remain on the platform through the month under the service’s typical one-month contracts and will likely move to Pluto TV or a similar site around the start of July.
The American Oldboy reworks Park Chan-wook’s seminal thriller, itself adapted from a manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. Josh Brolin stars as Joe Doucett, a man kidnapped and held for 20 years who is mysteriously released and sets out to find those responsible.
The cast also includes Elizabeth Olsen, Pom Klementieff, Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Ware, Michael Imperioli, Rami Malek, James Ransome, and the late Lance Reddick. The remake was a commercial and critical disappointment, grossing about $5 million worldwide compared with the original’s $17 million.
