Spielberg's Disclosure Day Tops Box Office as Obsession Keeps Drawing Crowds
Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, a return to his long-running interest in extraterrestrials, opened at number one with $44 million domestically and $92.9 million worldwide, well above early expectations of $35 million. The film cost $115 million to make, and will need roughly two to 2.5 times that sum to assuredly turn a profit.
Sixty percent of opening-weekend viewers were 35 or older, a sign that younger audiences were less engaged; Ready Player One opened to $41 million and ultimately made $607 million worldwide. Low-budget horror continued to dominate in its own way. Obsession, now in its fifth week, has taken in $265 million worldwide on a budget of less than $1 million.
Backrooms, made for about $10 million, has earned $262 million after three weeks. Scary Movie suffered a steep 70% sophomore drop but still sits at $173.1 million worldwide against a $30 million budget. Not every release is faring well.
