Cape Verde produced the tournament's biggest upset so far by holding Spain to a 0-0 draw in Atalanta. The debutants offered little threat on paper but 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha repeatedly kept La Roja at bay with a series of important saves. Spain struggled to create the clear openings expected of the reigning European champions.

Pedri was below his best, Ferran Torres squandered a sitter and hit the bar from close range, and Mikel Oyarzabal again failed to convince as a striker despite a headed chance tipped over. Coach Luis de la Fuente brought on Lamine Yamal with around 20 minutes to go; the Barcelona teenager added urgency but could not unlock a resilient Cape Verde backline.

Marcos Cucurella and Rodri had created notable chances, and substitutes Mikel Merino and Dani Olmo came close late, with Merino denied by a smart block. Gavi's surprise start yielded little creativity and finished early, while de la Fuente faced heavy criticism for his selections.
