Spacewalk Preparations, Research Fill Expedition 74 Schedule
Expedition 74 crew members continued spacewalk preparations Wednesday while advancing biomedical and technology studies aboard the International Space Station. Flight engineers Chris Williams and Jessica Meir are gearing up for their second spacewalk together, set to begin at 8:35 a.m.
EDT on Tuesday, June 30. They joined each other inside the Quest airlock to inspect the tethers that will secure spacewalkers and organized the equipment they will carry out, including pistol grip tools, cameras and stowage bags. The duo will spend about six hours and 40 minutes replacing a malfunctioned wrist joint on the Canadarm2.
Williams and Meir met with flight engineers Jack Hathaway and Sophie Adenot and called down to mission controllers in Houston to review procedures, then practiced delicate robotic maneuvers on a computer to access and replace the wrist joint. Hathaway and Adenot will support the two during the spacewalk by helping them in and out of their suits, monitoring activities and carefully adjusting the Canadarm2.
