Sony patent explores magnetic shape-shifting buttons for future controllers
A Sony patent has been published exploring new tactile feedback built into a gamepad. The filing describes reactive buttons that can soften or harden in real time (via Cheat Happens), offering different sensations depending on the situation or player preference.
The patent outlines several use-cases, including a "finger grab" effect that could grip the thumb tip during an in‑game grab, or buttons that change form to prevent slippage. It also highlights a possible accessibility benefit, with adaptable buttons altering shape to accommodate different hands, wrists or elbows.
Shape-shifting could be achieved either through fluid-filled membranes or so-called "magnetoviscoelastic elastomers." Much like magnetic tech already used in some controllers and keyboards, the mechanism would vary resistance based on magnetic field strength. Framed as a natural follow-on to the DualSense's haptics, the reactive buttons fit the same direction in tactile feedback.
