Sony hints a PS6 handheld is under consideration
PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino's comments have reignited talk of a portable PS6, a device that could challenge the Nintendo Switch 2. Rumors have suggested the handheld might match the ROG Xbox Ally X in memory, while others said not to expect a PS6 Portable until at least 2028.
Speaking to Famitsu (quotes translated by IGN), Nishino said today's consoles must consider the importance of a "pick up and play" quality and that Sony will be "leveraging technologies that can be used in various forms and locations" when making new consoles, which will lead to "something exciting." He added that, although PlayStation is closely associated with TV play in the living room, Sony plans to release monitors and speakers so people can play comfortably in other locations, and that it developed the PlayStation Portal as part of this initiative.
Sony has experimented with handhelds before, from the Japan-only PocketStation to the PSP—which sold over 70 million units—and the PS Vita, which faltered.
