Solo dev aims to 'beat the real GTA 6 to launch' with AI-fueled version
A solo developer known as Ziwen has begun building a Grand Theft Auto 6-like game and is sharing progress on Twitter. Early footage shows a large blue object moving across a simple 3D plane with a few platforms, and one update read, 'Day one of building GTA 6. Still feels fake typing that out.' The project started in Godot—chosen, Ziwen says, because 'it's community-owned, so nobody can pull an EPIC on us later and rewrite the deal once we're invested'—but the developer later pivoted engines, noting 'if you're serious about triple-A, get on a real engine.' Work so far includes 'a loop of AI agents' and a growing set of generative AI assets for Rockstar-style news clips.
Ziwen says there won't be a studio or publisher, 'just whoever shows up,' and has asked for volunteers. Ziwen has made a blunt goal public: 'Beat the real GTA 6 to launch.
