Suited and booted Socceroos stepped off the bus in Vancouver before a 2-0 win over Turkey, many of them carrying designer pouches. Tete Yengi and Mo Touré appeared to have Goyard, while Burberry checks and monograms from Louis Vuitton and Dior were also spotted.

The team’s suits came from Australian tailoring brand MJ Bale, but the luxury bags were “their own flair”, said Susie Thompson, partnerships and communications manager at MJ Bale. “You see some of the overseas basketball teams and they have their ‘tunnel moments’ in designer wear,” she said, adding that international sport has an element of emulation and arriving with a moment to accessorise.

Benjamen Judd, Esquire Australia’s head of content, said football is beginning to rival the NBA’s fashion chops. He pointed to high-profile carries — an Austrian captain with a $70,000 Birkin and France’s Marcus Thuram with a limited-edition Chanel — but does not expect the same opulence from Australian players.
