Speaking to Nikkei Asia via Computerbase, SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won said construction of four new facilities had been originally expected to finish by 2045 but the company has moved the target to 2034. He added, "There is currently no way to move faster than this." Chey said production will improve once the facilities are operational.

"Since we're proceeding with the plan to expand as much as possible, our calculations show that our wafer capacity will double within five years. But honestly, once all these facilities are built, it won't just double, it will triple by around 2034." That long-term increase does not address the current memory crisis, where demand for DRAM and NAND flash outweighs supply and memory prices have quadrupled since this time last year.

One could also argue the gap may widen if SK hynix cannot ramp up output soon, because AI companies' demands could take up more of its limited production capacity.
