Fans have long treated the town as the franchise's defining ingredient. Townfall, however, unfolds on St. Amelia, a remote Scottish island, and its trailer still feels unmistakably Silent Hill: grotesque creatures, a protagonist unraveling, a community hiding terrible secrets, and fog that obscures both landscape and truth.

The trailer even riffs on Harry Mason's radio with Simon's CRTV, a handheld analog television that detects horrors beyond normal perception. Moving the series out of the titular town worked for Silent Hill f. Despite concerns about its different setting, the game earned an 86% positive rating on Metacritic while preserving the atmosphere, psychological horror, music and layered symbolism that define the franchise.

It also kept ties to the wider mythology through references to White Claudia and recurring cult imagery, and some fans have theorized parts of the game secretly take place in Silent Hill — a notion that underlines how the town often feels more like a psychological state than a fixed locale.
