Sheriff Country's finale undermines its story with an abrupt mother reveal
Sheriff Country and its sister show, Fire Country, closed their seasons on very different notes. Fire Country ended on an unexpectedly tidy, happy beat with no cliffhangers, while Sheriff Country’s first-season finale, "Mexico," paired Mickey Fox’s takedown of Alec Kane and the arrest of Miranda Fraley with a startling twist: Eva Santos, the DEA deputy director who had been investigating Mickey and arrested her father Wes Fox, was revealed to be Mickey’s long‑lost, supposedly dead mother, Sarah Bernal Fox.
The reveal landed against earlier details that established Sarah’s death in prison from viral pneumonia and even showed Wes visiting her grave, so it felt sudden. Showrunner Matt Lopez explained that Eva had assumed Sarah’s identity as a young DEA agent, embedded in Edgewater to report on Wes, then fell in love, married him, faked her death and later resumed a DEA career that led to the deputy‑director post.
