Sgt. Isaac Atkins Earns Golden Buzzer on America's Got Talent
Sgt. Isaac Atkins took the stage on the third night of auditions for Season 21 of America's Got Talent and immediately caught the judges' attention. Mel B praised "that voice" before he sang a note, and Sofía Vergara, Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel were equally enthralled as Atkins described his move from military service toward performing.
He admitted to being nervous—"I jumped out of a plane at 18,000 feet, and this is scarier than that"—and said he had taken leave from the Army to audition. For his audition Atkins chose "Beggin'" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, a song that let him demonstrate both a high register and fuller range.
When he finished, Mel B told him, "Isaac, let me tell ya, you can sing," and Vergara added, "what a voice you have." Mel then hit the Golden Buzzer, sending Atkins through to the next stage. Visibly emotional after the moment, Atkins fought back tears and called his family backstage.
