Neon has scheduled the family crime thriller Fjord for an Oct. 9 release. Directed by Cristian Mungiu, the film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a religiously conservative couple who move to the wife’s progressive, remote Norwegian hometown. When bruises are noticed on one daughter at school, their five children are removed and a legal battle puts the family at the center of the town’s scrutiny.

Fjord debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, where it received a 12-minute standing ovation, and went on to win the Palme d'Or. The film was released in Romania on Jun. 19, after Neon acquired it prior to the festival debut. Neon has a history of picking up Palme d'Or winners: Fjord is the seventh such acquisition since Parasite in 2019.

Of those seven, five later earned Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, with Parasite and Anora winning Best Picture. Given a release strategy similar to Parasite and Anora—both of which opened in October—Fjord, currently at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, arrives as awards season begins.
