A Saturday press release from the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office said search efforts in Washington’s Okanogan River have been suspended after fresh rainfall made water levels and currents too dangerous. Officials no longer believe the unidentified person reported missing would be found in that stretch of the river.

Earlier, personnel from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, divers and cadaver dogs scoured the river but were unable to locate anyone. The sheriff’s office said a Wednesday 911 caller reported speaking to a man seated in the shallow part of the river, turning away, hearing a sound and then seeing the man facedown and drifting; a gun was later recovered near where the individual was last seen.
