A Sea of Thieves movie is in development — and it could work
The announcement of a Call of Duty movie in 2025 raised immediate questions about necessity; theatrical and streaming slates are already full of films that feel indistinguishable from big military shooters. That context makes the news that a Sea of Thieves movie is in development feel, at first glance, less predictable.
Entertainment Weekly reports the project is still in early stages, with no director attached, and will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton through his Hisako Films. Cretton’s credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty pointed out that Sea of Thieves’ main character is really the player and the community, and that the game’s cooperative, social tone suggests one way a film could approach the material.
