Xbox is adapting Rare’s Sea of Thieves into a live-action movie, with Destin Daniel Cretton producing through his multimedia company, Hisako. A director has not yet been named. The announcement lines up with Asha Sharma’s plan to make Xbox not just the biggest gaming company in the world, but the biggest entertainment company.

The move follows a string of Xbox adaptations in development, including an animated Minecraft series at Netflix, a live-action movie and an animated series based on Gears of War at Netflix, a Wolfenstein live-action TV show at Amazon, and a Fallout Shelter reality show.

Adaptations of Xbox games, such as Fallout and a Minecraft movie, have already been successful; Minecraft earned $163 million in its opening week. Turning Sea of Thieves into a conventional film poses creative challenges because the game’s main character is the player and the community.
