A Summer Game Fest trailer for Sea of Remnants leaned into a music video with only brief gameplay glimpses, so I had little idea what to expect when I played about 45 minutes on the final day of the event. After that hour, it was easier to see why the showcase barely resembled the game: Sea of Remnants tries to do many things at once and struggles to settle on an identity.

The demo mixes open-world exploration and sailing with gacha crew gathering, turn-based combat, a sprawling narrative delivered through high-production cutscenes and visual-novel conversations, plus roguelite elements. The pacing jumps: a quiet, meditative row toward a light gives way within 15 minutes to a battle with a giant sea monster on a fully upgraded ship, a failed fight, character creation and an awakening in a scientist’s lab.

On the hub island Orbtopia I chased a chicken, went to a bar, and watched opening credits introduce R.S., a spunky young pirate.
