I don't tend to use controllers very often, mostly playing competitive FPS games that require keyboard and mouse, but when I do my hand goes straight for the Scuf Valor Pro wired. The wireless version is also at a low price—$140 at Scuf ($142 at Amazon)—but the wired model is currently $80 at Scuf or $85 at Amazon.

When I reviewed the controller I was critical of the lack of wireless for a $100 product, even while rating it highly. Over time the other benefits have made it worth the money despite no wireless connectivity, and with the $20 discount it becomes an easy buy. Aside from 8K polling, which I find unnecessary, it has the features you want from a competitive controller: Hall effect thumbsticks, click/squeeze trigger toggles, back paddles and solid build quality.

Every button delivers a satisfying click, clack or thunk, the Xbox-like shape is comfortable, and the materials help the controller stay planted in your hand.
