Scary Movie's Rotten Tomatoes Score Suggests Sequel Faces Tepid Reception
Following an extended 13-year gap, the Wayans family has reunited to deliver a new Scary Movie entry that returns to the original title. Directed by Michael Tiddes and written by the Wayans family and Rick Alvarez, the film brings the original four leads back to face a foe from the first movie 26 years later.
The Wayans brothers (Marlon, Shawn, and Keenan Ivory) rejoin the project for the first time since they were let go from the franchise after major financial disputes following Scary Movie 2 in 2001. Rotten Tomatoes' initial Tomatometer shows only 22% of the 23 reviews counted were positive.
That places the new film as the third-worst in franchise history, ranking above Scary Movie 2 (13%) and Scary Movie V (4%), while the original 2000 release still holds the series' highest score at 52%. Several original cast members return, including Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Lochlyn Munroe, and Cheri Oteri, and the cast adds Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, and Sydney Park.
