VR leaker SadlyItsBradley relayed insider reports that Samsung Display has begun talks with equipment suppliers to build a fab capable of producing ultra-high-brightness Micro-OLED panels. He wrote that Samsung Display will order the equipment this year, install it in 2027, with mass production starting in 2028.

Jacob Ridley tried Micro-OLED earlier this year in a Pimax headset and found it preferable to traditional QLED optics. The Sony panel in that demo had a lower vertical resolution but still delivered a high pixel-per-degree clarity (53) thanks to a reduced field of view; Ridley noted a little more glare than usual, but praised the vibrancy, crystal clarity and lack of discernible screen door, with the primary downside being an extra few hundred dollars on top.

Micro-OLED’s advantage comes from placing light-emitting diodes on silicon rather than glass, letting manufacturing on silicon wafer substrates achieve much higher pixel densities.
