Salford City sack Karl Robinson despite club’s best-ever season
Salford City co-owners David Beckham and Gary Neville have dismissed head coach Karl Robinson with immediate effect, despite the club’s highest-ever league finish and a trip to Wembley. The decision followed a 3-0 defeat by Notts County in the League Two play-off final at Wembley, a result that left the owners visibly frustrated in the stands.
Robinson departs after two-and-a-half years in charge, having overseen 132 games and 60 victories. He stabilised a side that had fallen to 20th and guided them to fourth in League Two, but the team missed automatic promotion by a single point to Cambridge United and were beaten in the play-offs; a run of five defeats in six games in January proved costly.
The club announced the change on social media and praised Robinson’s professionalism and dedication: “Karl Robinson has left his position as Head Coach of Salford City with immediate effect. Karl has conducted himself throughout his time at Salford City with professionalism and integrity.
