Russian Drone Hits Romanian Apartment Building, Officials Say
Romanian authorities said a Russian attack drone hit an apartment building in the port city of Galati on Friday, injuring two people. Officials described it as the first known instance of a Russian drone causing damage and injuries in a major urban area on NATO territory.
The drone struck the roof of a residential compound, an episode that authorities said sharply escalated tensions after years of smaller crashes along the Danube. NATO condemned “Russia’s recklessness,” and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said, “Russia’s war of aggression has crossed yet another line.” A senior Western military official added there was “no doubt” the drone was Russian and said investigators were examining whether careless behavior or jamming had knocked it off course.
Romania asked NATO to speed the transfer of anti-drone capabilities and summoned Russia’s ambassador in Bucharest. The government also announced the closure of a Russian consulate in Constanta and the expulsion of the consul general.
