The Highlander reboot has assembled a stacked cast that includes Djimon Hounsou, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill. Crowe will play Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, the role Sean Connery played in the 1986 film, and said the reboot "is going to be fantastic" because it is a Chad Stahelski film — Stahelski directed the John Wick movies, Crowe noted, and is "incapable of directing a film that is not exciting." Crowe confirmed he has finished filming his scenes and has promised to "do Ramírez as a Spaniard." He pointed out that the original handled the character’s accent by having Connery’s Ramirez speak with a Scottish accent while calling the character a Spaniard, explaining earlier that Ramirez came from Egypt.

Crowe also recalled wanting to play Maximus as a Spaniard in Gladiator but being prevented by the director. Reaction to Crowe’s accents in films has been mixed: his work in L.A. Confidential and Cinderella Man drew praise, while Kraven the Hunter and The Pope’s Exorcist were criticized.
