After the Fourteenth Doctor’s controversial regeneration into former travelling companion Rose Tyler in summer 2025, and Disney’s departure, questions mounted over the show’s next steps. The BBC and former showrunner Russell T. Davies have announced they will not go ahead with the previously announced 2026 Christmas episode, and Davies and production company Bad Wolf have left the series.

The BBC said it will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year, describing the move as part of "securing the next phase of the show for future generations" and noting that "Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC." The statement added that, rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, the decision was made to "invest in the long-term future of the show," and that a new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies is currently in production.
