Wayne Rooney urged Thomas Tuchel to avoid repeating Gareth Southgate’s approach to Harry Kane’s minutes after Kane scored in England’s 2-0 win over Panama. The former England captain warned that Kane has looked tired late in past tournaments and should be protected when matches are secure.

England had struggled early against a physical Panama side, going in 0-0 at half before Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock after 62 minutes and Kane added a header five minutes later. Rooney pointed out that Kane was withdrawn in the 84th minute and argued managers should take him off when a game is effectively done to prevent late-tournament fatigue.

Rooney also stressed that the focus should remain on the country rather than individual awards, noting the crowded Golden Boot race and recalling Southgate’s reluctance to substitute Kane. He said he hopes Tuchel will give the captain rest when possible. Tuchel defended the performance, praising his side’s patience and workrate against a tough opponent.
