Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their World Cup opener in Houston, a result that intensified scrutiny of Cristiano Ronaldo after a quiet showing. The 41-year-old registered just 25 touches — his lowest ever in a full major tournament match — and extended his scoreless run to 10 consecutive World Cup and Euros appearances.

Elma Aveiro defended her brother on Instagram, writing: "I believe that beginnings are difficult, but endings are good. You are the ones on the field. It’s easy to talk. And besides, having victory stolen in this way, it’s not easy." Katia Aveiro also posted in his defence but looked to the team’s organisation, questioning the side’s rhythm and cohesion.

She wrote: "As if by magic, they forgot how to pass to each other, recover balls, launch counter-attacks. The game took place from the midfield to the back. Strange, this World Cup. Strange. But let's go. Bad starts, great endings. Until the end." Not all reaction was supportive.
