A well-known hardware leaker, KeplerL2, says the PlayStation 6's bill of materials has climbed by about $200 to roughly $900 per unit, a near 30 percent rise since March. That BOM figure excludes labor, shipping and retailer cuts, so the true cost to get each console into stores would be higher.

Many now expect a launch price around $900 or above $1,000, especially since Sony told investors: "As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses." The company’s statement stops short of promising per-unit profit, indicating it still expects to break even or take a loss on each console.

Calls to delay the PS6 have met resistance from analysts.
