The Ring Outdoor Cam, the company’s base-level battery-powered security camera, is on sale for $40 on Amazon — a $40 reduction from its usual $80, or 50% off. It records in 1080p HD, offers color night vision and a 130-degree field of view. The Ring app sends motion alerts, provides live view, enables two-way talk and lets you draw motion zones to cut down on false alarms.

The battery uses a quick-release pack that can be swapped out in seconds. Battery life varies with activity: a busy driveway can mean monthly charges, while a quiet side yard might last six months. Live View is available at any time, and the two-way audio is suitable for short conversations like directing a delivery person.

Motion Zones help reduce unnecessary alerts, but recorded video, video history and Person Alerts require a Ring Protect plan, which costs about $5 a month or $50 a year per camera. Without that plan you still get motion notifications and live view, but no saved footage — giving only about thirty seconds to open the app and view an event.
