Ridley Scott delivered one of the biggest historical action epics with Gladiator, but many of his later films in the same vein were overlooked. With the exception of 2024's Gladiator II, recent entries struggled to match that success: Napoleon was a notable box office bomb, Robin Hood divided critics, and Kingdom of Heaven underperformed.

Perhaps the most underrated of the lot is The Last Duel, which was released in 2021 and was added to Paramount+’s streaming library on Jun. 1. Written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, The Last Duel stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck alongside Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, Harriet Walter and Alex Lawther.

Set in 14th-century France, it recounts the last trial by combat: Sir Jean de Carrouges (Damon) defends the honor of his wife Marguerite de Carrouges (Comer) after she accuses Jacques Le Gris (Driver) of assault, a charge that can only be settled by a duel to the death.
