Ridley Scott returned to historical action with Kingdom of Heaven, directed by Scott and written by William Monahan. Set in the 12th century during the Crusades, Orlando Bloom stars as Balian de Ibelin, a widower who joins his father, navigates the Christian army's politics and must defend Jerusalem.

The ensemble cast also features Liam Neeson, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Martin Sheen, Edward Norton and Alexander Siddig. The film was widely panned when it opened in 2005, holding a 39% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though reviewers such as Roger Ebert gave it a strong score.

Audiences have been kinder: with more than 250,000 registered user ratings the movie holds a 72% audience score and has built a serious cult following over the past two decades. Against a budget of $130 million, Kingdom of Heaven grossed just over $214 million.
