Research Funding Slows Again for Universities Targeted by White House
Government data show the Trump administration has quietly slowed scientific research funding for Harvard and other universities that have been targets of a White House pressure campaign. The National Science Foundation flagged grant proposals that had been recommended for funding for additional scrutiny, leaving researchers largely in the dark; records show Duke, Princeton and Yale were also affected.
Some holds set off alarm inside the agency and on campuses, and federal judges ruled last year that the administration had broken the law by halting grants as a way to impose policy changes. Michael Gerhardt, a constitutional law professor, said the recent N.S.F.
holds may violate a federal court order that barred blocking future research funding for Harvard out of retaliation. All four universities have been targets in the administration’s yearlong campaign to expunge what it calls “woke” ideology from campuses, a push that has involved pausing research funds and opening civil rights investigations.
