Laufey taking the lead role has prompted a vocal backlash online, with a subsection of people using it to air misogynistic complaints that Kratos has been “sidelined” by the “woke mind virus,” or similar arguments. That response reads oddly against the games themselves.

Kratos spent the 2018 reboot and 2022’s Ragnarok elevating Faye, and he keeps doing so even after her death. When Atreus, newly aware of his godhood, grows careless and even fires a stray at his mother because she “wasn’t a god,” Kratos falls silent but remembers: he later refuses to let Atreus carry her ashes and tells him she was “better than a god,” calling any treatment of her as less a “dishonor” on her good name.

Other characters also speak highly of Faye. Sindri and Brok gifted her the ice-powered Leviathan Axe and mourn her passing, while Mimir recounts her heroism, saying she spent her life “making a nuisance of herself in the most noble of ways,” much to the annoyance of gods like Thor.
