I reinvented myself by losing 300 pounds and moving from the US to Spain
Two months after leaving a steady job in pharmaceuticals, Erin Vlack turned down a senior directorship and began thinking about moving to be near her son, Gavin, who was studying medicine in Spain. She reached out to immigration lawyers that same afternoon, and just over a year later she was renting a three-bedroom house less than 20 minutes from him in Valencia, calling it the happiest and healthiest she has ever been.
A decade earlier, at 5ft 5in she weighed 430 pounds and wore size 28, having binged and comfort-eaten after the deaths of both her parents and through financial struggles that limited fresh food options. She adopted the Keto diet and started exercising, losing 172 pounds before gastric bypass surgery in 2022, which brought her down to 140 pounds and size six jeans.
In 2024 she had a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction because breast cancer runs in her family.
